On February 18, I tied a Trail Camera to a big pine tree, which was facing a spot that looked like a deer bed to me. There had been deer tracks everywhere. On the 21st, I checked the camera. There were six videos. None of them seemed to have any animals besides a grey squirrel. I decided to dismantle the camera after the snowstorm, on the 26th. 8 days at a deer bed, and no good photos. or so I thought.
When I was looking through the recent photos from the new fox den, I realized I had forgotten to delete the failed photos from Juniper hill. I hit play just in case I missed something. a doe was walking through the frame. I guess it was so camouflaged that the deer camouflaged in the thumbnail. Once it moved, I can clearly see it. Unfortunately, that's the only deer photo from the setup... Can you see the deer?
...Here are two zoomed in screenshots of the deer in the video, for a closer look:
The doe is most likely pregnant with a fawn, in the photo. Deer court during "the rut" which happens in the fall. By the time the winter begins, most does are pregnant with 1-2 fawns. A photo/video of a white spotted, newly born deer fawn and it's mother would be great. I'll have to wait until this summer for that opportunity. That was the very last video the camera capture before I brought it home, so if I had left it out a little longer, I would probably have gotten more.
It took me a minute to figure out what the little brown thing is. I soon realized it was an assapan (southern flying squirrel) It glides from one tree to another. You may need to watch the video a couple times to see it. I love getting these neat little guys on video. I guess there are lots of them in the woodlands in the Juniper Hill/Sudbury River area.
Clip of the snowstorm. Camera was activated by the grey squirrel. It weird how the snow shaded the woods, and everything looks darker. I'm surprised the storm didn't motivate the deer to bed down under the sheltering hemlock tree shown. I guess they hung out in the regenerating pines.
I placed my other camera low to the ground, to try and get turkeys. After the deep snow, I haven't been able to find it. I hope I find it when the snow melts. Somebody may have stolen it.
